Pingback: o/t: At Last — An Index! | Noirish
I am enjoying my new found similarities in our viewing choices and love reading your thoughts. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for the kind words! Do tell all your friends to drop by!
Hi. I have the book, and love it, despite the spoilers that stop me from reading more than one line of any entry before seeing the film. (Seriously, some of those spoilers should be called ‘ruiners’.) I just saw ‘Rififi en la ciudad’, in Spanish (which I’m fortunate enough to understand) without subs, and realise that’s probably why you only give it three lines in your book. As a lover of noir (and Jess Franco), it has to be said that this is a major noir entry, marketed in Spain as a Spanish classic. Here’s hoping there’ll be an English-subbed version so more noir fans can watch this overlooked gem. Great site. What could be better than your book? Your own website with even more movies on it!
Thanks for calling by, and for the kind words, Waldo!
despite the spoilers
Well, it is intended as a reference book rather than a Maltin-style guide! That said, I tried to avoid spoilers if I could do so while still conveying accurately what the movie was actually about. If you’ve seen the Silver et al. noir encyclopedia you’ll know that they give full summaries of all the movies they cover. (Of course, they have far more space to play with because dealing with so many fewer movies.)
Thanks very much for the tip about Rififi en la ciudad. I’ll have to hunt around and see if I can find a not too expensive copy so I can check it out with a view to giving it an entry here.
Thank you very much for a very interesting website. I am a very great fan of film noirs. Do you know that the Norwegian female director, Edith Carlmar, in 1949 made Norway’s first film noir, “Døden er et kjærtegn” (“Death Is a Caress”)? On year later the Swede Hasse Ekman made a very good Swedish film noir, “Flicka och hyacinter” (“Girl with Hyacinths”). It borrowed its narrative structure from “Citizen Kane”.
Thanks for dropping by, Morten. I know Carlmar’s movie — and indeed there’s an entry on it in my Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Film Noir — but I don’t know Flicka och hyacinter. I must try to correct my ignorance about it! Many thanks for the tip.
Hi it’s such a nice surprise to find this website! I purchased your book recently as a birthday present for a friend, and I couldn’t put the book down (nearly kept it for myself haha)! I love movies in general – especially European movies, and classic American movies (mainly from 1930s to 1970s). It is really interesting to see some of the titles you included in your book that would never have occurred to me as a film noir, such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!
I was wondering if you might include Phoenix (2014, Germany) on this website? It is such an exquisite film and very noirish /Hitchcockian, many other reviewers have made the same comments! Would love to know what you think!
Many thanks for the kind comments about the book — much appreciated. My aim in it was to try to cover the subject of film noir as comprehensively as possible, which means there are entries on movies that aren’t themselves noir but can be considered to relate to the field. A couple of the critics became exercised at my inclusion of Throw Momma from the Train, yet that movie strikes me as an essential footnote to considerations of Strangers on a Train, so . . .
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is, though, I’d say a fairly central piece of neonoir, based as it is on a classic piece of Scandinoir.
Phoenix is currently enqueued for inclusion here. Not sure when I’ll get to it, but it recently graduated to the (longish) shortlist for watching.
Thanks once again for your interest and kind words!
Hello! I just want to say that this is an extremely comprehensive website and I so much appreciate the great work done here! This is the love and attention that Film Noir deserves. I am wondering how I can reach the author of this site? I am the director of the 2012 short MIDNIGHT CATCH and it was such an honor to see it included in these articles. I want to reach the author to not only thank him for the inclusion but also to say that I am releasing my first feature film titled THE DEPTHS Starring Michael Rispoli (Sopranos, The Rum Diary) which is another neo-noir outing for me as a director and it may be of interest to the author here. Please let me know how I can reach them! Thanks!
