The countdown of Romantic movies continues apace at the great movie website Wonders in the Dark, with five new essays this week:

The odd one out here is, obviously, The Man who Laughs, based on the Victor Hugo novel L’Homme qui Rit. Most people would, I think,  classify Paul Leni’s screen adaptation as a horror movie rather than a romantic one, yet some of our most iconic horror movies similarly have a strong romantic theme: The Phantom of the Opera (1925) is one very obvious example; at least two of the versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923/1939; also of course based on a Hugo novel) fall into this category too. We can all think of others.
